Hot Toddy and the Chills
Plus news from Shiner, Ghia and Chateau De'Kush
Wotcha! Got back to the States at the beginning of the week and almost immediately succumbed to a nasty sinus infection. So unfortunately I’m pulling a sicky this week, unless you want my thoughts on NyQuil and Alka-Seltzer Plus. However I do have a fabulous hot toddy recipe from the Food Network’s Dragana Kovacevic. Perfect for this time of year, whether you catch a cold or the holiday spirit.
Normal service resumed next week.

The ModSub thoughts: At this time of year, it doesn't get much better than a mulled wine or a hot toddy: the warmth in your hands, the smell of ingredients simmering in the kitchen and tasting the collage of flavors. Nothing gets me into the holiday spirit more than a warm cocktail, except perhaps Wham's “Last Christmas.”
I landed on this recipe because of the unusual ingredients. Unlike the typical mix of hot water, lemon, honey and cloves, this concoction elevates the entire experience.
I'm really happy with this. The depth and complexity of flavors, the subtle lingering heat coupled with the spice of cardamom and cinnamon as well as the sweet, earthy notes of nutmeg.
The addition of ginger, pepper, jalapeños and tamarind turn up the heat and do a fine job of standing in for the traditional whiskey. I might add a little more jalapeño next time or at least not remove the seeds, just to give it that extra bit of oomph.
Plus orange marmalade to bump up the citrus notes. Yes please!
It’s quick to whip up and perfect for taking my mind off this sinus infection. No doubt it’s an excellent holiday cocktail.

How Dragana Kovacevic describes her hot toddy: This lower-sugar, alcohol-free toddy will warm you right up on the most frigid winter days. Featuring warming ingredients such as ginger, jalapeno, pepper and tamarind – a common ingredient in Thai and Caribbean cuisines – the nuances in this winter cocktail will not only layer heat, but add tons of delicious flavour, too.
