Hello! If you or someone on your team is developing an article about Dry January — here is a free resource I just rolled out to the subscribers/followers of my newsletter — The Modern Substitute.

I am an independent writer based in Oregon who started an alcohol-free journey January 1, 2022 by challenging myself to a Dry January. I can’t express how grateful I am to the innovative and creative companies developing products that kept me on my path — through that first month and beyond (unexpectedly).

It took a lot of time and research to learn about all the options in the growing NA industry. I wanted to give back by helping others on were considering a similar path and write my first newsletter post on August 19, 2023. Since then I have published 66 articles and reviewed 190+ drinks.

I believe this is a timely topic not only as January starts but also when it starts getting harder through the month. Also, I have found that when individuals reach the end of Dry January, Dry July or Sober October, many find themselves asking, “Now what?” I hope this resource helps them keep going, keep some NA options in the mix, or simply be ready with more options the next time they want to quit for a month.

Below are some quick bullets. Please let me know if I can be helpful to you or someone on your team with additional information or some introductions to folks in the industry.

Addressing a need

  • With approximately 1,500+ adult non-alcoholic drinks on the market, it is very hard for consumers to know where to start with the mountain of options. This guide helps people start that journey so they can find great NA substitutes.

  • Readers have shared a variety of reasons for seeking interesting, adult NA drinks versus opting for conventional “non-alcoholic” options on menus (e.g., soft drinks, tea, lemonade, milk)

    • Wanting to drink less or no alcohol (health need or goal, pregnancy, medications, improved quality of life)

    • Supporting a loved one who needs to quit alcohol

    • Enjoying the benefits of al alcohol-free life by celebrating or winding down in a healthier way

  • An unexpected outcome of the weekly newsletter and hopefully the guide as well is the sense of inclusivity and belonging. People want alternatives to the pervasive alcohol culture we live in and in doing so, they can continue to be a part of their community and social circles

Growth in the NA space

  • According to NielsonIQ, 82% of people who buy non-alcoholic drinks also buy alcohol

  • IWSR reported a 5% growth in no and low consumption in the world’s 10 leading markets

  • This 2023 IWSR report gives a great overview of the growth of the U.S. market

Thank you for your consideration!
